Ibm ThinkPad T43 Laptop Overview

Filed under: Laptop Battery,laptop Review — Tags: — admin @ 10:16 am

The latest ThinkPad thin-and-light T series notebook addition comes in the form of the T43.  The ThinkPad brand has been built over many years now and has come to stand for high-quality, solidly built laptops that are rugged in their matte black look, yet sleek and professional at the same time.  Usability is second-to-none with the ThinkPad line and consumer oriented bells and whistles such as multicard readers or widescreen LCDs are shunned in favor of things such as adding keyboard lights, biometric security readers, hard-drive shock protection or other things that generally add to the usability, durability and security of a notebook.

Ibm ThinkPad T43 Design

Aside from the new fingerprint reader (optional), we find that the design for the T43 does not deviate from previous T4X models.  Since the ThinkPad T43 is intended for and targeted at business buyers, continuing on this look is just perfect.

Important to note is that Ibm Thinkpad t43p Battery is both a 15.0″ and 14.1″ screen configuration available, our T43 is the 14.1″.  Settling for the smaller sized screen results in a smaller overall footprint, less weight and longer battery life and so is better for someone that desires to be more mobile.

Like IBM’s previous T4X series models, the T43 is a textbook definition of physical quality.  From the first time you touch it, you know it’s just good. The screen cover for the ThinkPad T42 is constructed of magnesium alloy and prevents any screen flexing.  With other laptops you can usually push on the back of the lid and get a worrying ripple effect on the LCD screen, the T43 protective case will prevent such a thing from happening. The ThinkPad’s insides are housed in a case of titanium-reinforced plastic. The whole thing is held together by a pair of sturdy metal hinges that attach the screen and main body of the laptop.  These metal hinges ensure that there is no screen coggle, even when on a turbulent plane ride. The T43 just looks like it’s been designed to take a beating (although you should still avoid abusing the Ibm Fru 92p1227 Battery notebook computer when possible).

Input and Output Ports

Below are some pictures of each side of the ThinkPad T43 that displays what ports we have on each side of the notebook.  Please note that I have the optional 9-cell extended life battery installed so the notebook battery sticks out, the standard 6-cell battery is flushed with the back of the T43.

On the right side of the T43 we have the optical drive and what’s called the D-SUB port (can be used to carry analogue video signals to a monitor).  With this configuration the optical drive comes in the form of a CD-RW/DVD-RW drive.  This bay is actually altogether modular and is called the UltraBay by IBM.  You can use the UltraBay to put in an extra laptop battery ,battery, a different type of optical drive or even a sled that contains a secondary hard drive that is possible to boot to.  Also of note is the hard drive for the T43 is at the front right side and you simply remove a screw from the bottom of the laptop and then slide out the tray it’s stored in to swap the hard drive out if you wish.

On the left side of the ThinkPad T43 we have a majority of our ports.  Two USB 2.0 ports are on the back right side.  Personally I’d like to see more than just two ports, but for a thin and light this is acceptable, although not optimal.  We also have an S-Video output port available.  The modem and Ethernet jacks reside next to the S-Video port.  Headphone out and microphone in ports are sandwiched between the Ethernet port and fan vent.  On the front right side we have a PC card slot (PCMCIA slot) and ExpressCard slot.  It’s nice to have the ExpressCard slot as that will be the standard of the future for allowing accessory expansion on notebooks.  However, for right now there are very few ExpressCard compatible accessories available.

On the back of the T43 you can see the battery (sticking out in this case because it’s an extended life Ibm Thinkpad x23 Battery and notebook battery), power jack input and parallel port.  The parallel port is a legacy port hangover and is completely unnecessary for the consumer, but there are some corporate customers that still need this.

On the front of the notebook the only thing we find are the two latches to hold the screen down (two latches work much better than one for keeping the lid down and tightly closed by the way) and an IrDA port for wireless infrared communication with other devices or laptop computers.

Ibm ThinkPad Screen

My IBM T43 notebook came with an SXGA (1,280 x 1,024) resolution display.  Personally I prefer having an SXGA screen over XGA.  I used a 15-inch screen IBM T42 with an XGA screen (1,024 x 768 resolution) for a period of time, and I can verify that you are able to see more on the screen using a T43 14-inch SXGA (1,400 x 1,050) resolution screen.  You can probably see about 10% – 15% more on the 14-inch SXGA screen relative to a 15-inch XGA screen.  It’s very reasonable to have more than one document open at a time with an SXGA 14-inch screen.

The screen quality and brightness is middle of the road.  When compared to other notebook computer screens such as the Sony XBrite screen or Toshiba TruBrite screen, the IBM T43 falls short.  Brightness and clarity on the Ibm 46h4144 Battery does not match the top screens out on the market today.  The whites on this screen are also not pure white but rather have a very slight tint of yellow, it’s not uncommon to find that an LCD presents whites with either a very small yellowish or bluish hue.

Although the screen brightness level is not the best out there, I find the horizontal viewing angle of the T43 to be quite excellent.  At a 45 degree horizontal viewing angle things are very readable and viewable still, and even from a full 90 degree viewing angle horizontally I am able to read text on web pages and in MS Word.  There are no dead pixels present on the notebook’s display.  Ghosting on the display (a phenomenon in which fast motion on a screen causes streaks or trails of ghost images) has not been an issue with this display, some T42 users reported such issues, especially on 15-inch display models.

Ibm ThinkPad Keyboard / TouchPad / TrackPoint

The TrackPoint navigation featuring a pointing stick, touchpad and multiple mouse buttons lets you choose your favorite way to navigate the cursor on the screen.  I’m a huge fan of the pointing stick.  The pointing stick and TrackPoint navigation are great for three reasons.

   1. The pointing stick makes it really easy to get the cursor where you want it to go on the screen.  I’ve never met a touchpad that gives you precise control and gets the cursor where you want it to go 100% of the time.  With the pointing stick the cursor goes exactly where you want Ibm 40y7001 Battery, and if it begins to act funny and not go where you want it to, simply let go and the machine recalibrates the pointing stick automatically.
   2. When the pointing stick is combined with the scroll button (located between the two upper mouse buttons) you can scroll through web pages and long documents with ease.  Just hold down the scroll button and push the pointing stick up or down to scroll to where you want on a page.
   3. The mouse buttons are raised very nicely making it easy to feel the buttons and push them.  Competitors often have buttons that are barely raised, or even worse, flat.

The keyboard on the T43 is in line with the usual IBM exacting standards, there’s not a notebook computer out there with as usable a keyboard.  In fact, I prefer the T43 keyboard to even some external computer keyboards I’ve used.  The IBM ThinkPad keyboard uses 7-rows of keys as opposed to the usual 6-rows competitors’ use, this makes for more typing room and less cramping of the fingers.  Each keyboard key is firm and has excellent travel, and each key feels individual.  On a lot of notebooks you’ll get flexing of the keyboard, so when promoting in a key you’ll see other keys around it get slightly depressed and if you push in on the keyboard you’ll see the entire keyboard sag.  Not so with any ThinkPad, the keyboard is solid with zero rattle and zero flex.  The usability and bioengineerings of a keyboard is hugely important for a laptop, IBM has done very much research and exerted great effort to ensure this powerful feature is as good as Ibm Thinkpad t40p Battery can be.

IBM ThinkPad keyboards are sealed and sit inside of a tray so that spills do not get to the electronics underneath.  Now this doesn’t mean the T43 is waterproof and 100% spill proof by any means (liquid can still get in the vents if your aim is really bad), what it does mean is that if you spill some weewee onto the keyboard then you’ll have time to tip up the notebook and pour the liquid out before it seeps down into the internal components of the notebook.

One thing I should note regarding any ThinkPad keyboard is that IBM has always been stubborn about not putting a “Windows” key on the bottom left-side that nearly every other notebook has.  Pushing this key by default pops up the start menu in Windows.  Some people like having this and find it annoying when it’s not there, personally I don’t care, and I’m sure some Linux fans are just plain chuffed that IBM chooses to leave this Windows friendly button out!

Above the main keyboard are a few hardware buttons: the power button, Ibm Thinkpad r51 Series Battery volume up and down buttons, a mute button and the blue “Access IBM” button.  The Access IBM button will launch an IBM software application called Access IBM that will guide you in using, protecting, configuring and updating software on your T43.  Once again, this shows IBM is highly concerned about the ThinkPad’s usability and end user experience.  It would have been nice to have play, pause and stop buttons for the DVD player, but these are more consumer oriented features and in general IBM shies away from such things.  Apparently in the future this “Access IBM” button is going to be named “ThinkVantage” due to the Lenovo buyout of the IBM PC division (more on that later).

Ibm ThinkPad Processor and Performance

This particular ThinkPad T43 I’m using comes with a Pentium M 750 1.86GHz processor, and for using standard work applications this is absolutely more than enough for what you’ll need.  In general, with a 7200RPM hard drive and 512MB of RAM (my T43′s configuration) you’ll be very good with the overall T43 speed performance.  Functioning programs such as Microsoft Visual Studio, Microsoft Word, Adobe PhotoShop and Media Player at the same time, and flipping between them, were common tasks I performed and never made the T43 hiccup.

We use Super Pi to get a benchmark of processor speed.  The Super Pi program simply forces the processor to calculate Pi to a selected number of digits of accuracy.  Calculating to 2 million digits is our benchmark:

Ibm ThinkPad T43 Sound

I’ve used one laptop in the past two years that has truly impressed me with its built-in speaker performance (and I’ve lost count of how many total laptops I’ve used!), that computer was the Dell Inspiron 9100.  Ironically, Dell made the 9100 for all of six months before ending its production.  The ThinkPad 43 does not end the streak of disappointing laptop speakers.  The T43 speakers are very average, there’s no bass whatsoever provided by them and any higher notes sound thin.  Headphones or a pair of external speakers and Ibm Thinkpad r60e Battery are a necessity for decent sound.  I can say the same for just about every other laptop I use though.

Ibm ThinkPad Wireless Connectivity

The ThinkPad T43 I have comes with an Intel 2915 PRO/Wireless 802.11 a/b/g internal wi-fi card.  I had no problems using wireless on the T43.  Using the built-in IBM Access Connections application makes it very easy to find networks and manage various wireless connection profiles.  IBM places what it calls the UltraConnect Wireless Antenna in the upper right-hand part of the screen.  You can’t see it of course as it’s enclosed in the casing, but Ibm 08k8178 Battery really helps to expand your wireless range.  Most manufacturers take the cheap route and put the antenna in the base part of the system where it’s susceptible to interference from all the other components there.

The T43 has an antenna in the screen area for better reception

There is no internal Bluetooth in the T43 I have, but Infrared (IrDA) is integrated into the ThinkPad and can serve as a useful way to connect to PDAs or cellphones.  When a ThinkPad with IrDA gets close to another ThinkPad with IrDA you’ll get a noise effect that sounds like a spring and you’ll be asked if you’d like to transfer files between the two machines.

Ibm ThinkPad T43 Battery

The battery included with the T43 is a frequent 6-cell Lithium Ion rechargeable battery.  If you crave more battery life you can buy an extended life 9-cell battery for around $140.  Using the 9-cell battery I was able to get 5 hours and 39 minutes of life just doing things like web pasturing and using Word.  I had the screen brightness just above half (4 bars out of 7) and wi-fi was on.  Using the 6-cell battery you can expect 33% less battery life, but it’s still pretty good.  With the 6-cell I’d usually run out of battery at about 4 hours of usage.

You can also swap out the CD drive and place an UltraBay Slim battery there so that when your #1 battery gets low you can just tell the notebook to switch to using the #2 battery, or it will do this mechanically for you if battery #1 gets low.  An ultrabay slim Ibm Thinkpad a21e Series Battery retails for around $120 (UltraBay Slim Battery).  If you have an extended life battery and UltraBay battery you’ll have all day usage of your T43 without needing to plug in — but it’ll be a lot heavier with those two laptop batteries!

Fingerprint Reader Security and Software

The T43 can be configured with a built-in fingerprint reader on the right side to provide biometric security.  The fingerprint reader is unobtrusive in nature and won’t be noticed unless you know to look

The first question to answer regarding this feature would be, why is IBM even offering it?  According to Big Blue, the fingerprint reader provides a convenient means for unique user identification to a Windows system and eliminates the need for users to remember triple passwords.  In a large corporate environment this reduces the number of calls to support for forgotten passwords.

Moving away from the rational factor and onto the usability factor, the biggest concern I had with the biometric protection was that it would be a pain to get things setup.  This is not the case though.  The first time you start using the T43 with biometric security you’ll get the following screen that prompts you to “enroll” at least two fingers for the ability to scan and use as your Windows logon.

Once you’ve successfully enrolled two fingers you will be prompted by the software as to whether you’d like to now use finger swipes to logon to Windows.  In addition to substituting a fingerswipe for Windows logon you can also use the fingerscan for what IBM calls “Power Up” security.  This means that when you turn your computer on it will sit and wait for you to scan your finger before it will even start to boot.  So for the ultimate security use both the Power Up and Windows logon passwords/fingerscan.

Actually using the finger subscriber is relatively easy.  Just slide the end of your finger over the reader, and if it does not read right the software will actually coach you to move your finger to the right or left.  Ibm Thinkpad r60e Series Battery does take a little bit of training to use the reader the right way, you can move your finger too fast or too slow and you do need to line the finger up right, I can basically get the read right in one or two tries, but I won’t say it’s sure fire to work every time on the first try.

Although biometric security sounds really secure, it’s not necessarily more secure than a good password.  In fact, there is a just slightly less than .5% chance that some random person could authenticate as you using their own finger.  This is actually a lot worse security-wise than what a secure password can achieve.  A secure password consists of at least 6 characters (more is better) with combined alpha, numeric and lower/upper case characters.  If you use a secure password, there’s slim to no chance anyone will get into your windows account.  The trouble is that people use their favorite pet’s name, spouse’s name, the city they live in, or their last name as passwords.  Using these for passwords is very insecure and hackers will get into your machine in seconds if they know just a little bit of personal information about you.  And that’s when biometric security is better than a typed password.

Also, consider the fact that when you do use a very secure password, our feeble human mind Ibm Thinkpad t60p Battery is much more likely to forget that password.  If you are at work, where a secure password is much more important for a computer, a forgotten password intimates a call to the IT department and lost time.  Fortunately, the likelihood of losing your finger is fairly low (please be careful when handling knives and scissors) so if you’re using biometric security there’s little chance of a “forgotten password”.

For a white paper resource that covers all the advantages of biometric security check out this link: http://www.research.ibm.com/journal/sj/403/ratha.html

Conclusion

If what you are looking for is a highly durable yet light laptop, with great performance, great usability and from a company that will provide good service and support, then the ThinkPad T43 is the hand that fits the glove. On paper you will be able to configure a Dell Inspiron with the same specs as a T43 for a lower price, but you won’t get the same build quality and usability with an Inspiron.

The T43 is particularly good for business related work and for computer programmers — two occupations in which you spend a lot of time using a computer and keyboard and also might need extra security to protect your data.  If you’re going to be parking your laptop on a desk and want a lot of multimedia options, the T43 is not a good choice as it has no flash card readers, no FireWire port, limited USB ports and just so-so graphics performance.  Alternatively, anybody that travels a lot and desires a thin and light notebook battery that can be a real workhorse should look to the T43 as a fantastic solution.

Pros

    * The best keyboard around, Ibm Thinkpad r52 Battery combined with TrackPoint navigation allows for easy use and input
    * Tough case (titanium reinforced plastic) and rugged design, yet still thin-and-light
    * Using finger scanner as a substitute for password logon makes for easy yet secure protection of your account.
    * Great wireless range and features
    * UltraBay allows option to easily put in an extra hard drive, different optical drive such as a DVD burner, or an extra Laptop Batteries.

Cons

    * Pricey, you’ll pay $2,000 and up for a good configuration
    * No FireWire port or media card reader, only two USB 2.0 ports
    * If you’re upgrading from a ThinkPad T40, T41 or T42, nobody will notice you got a new notebook because it looks the same (I had to find one more con!)

Premium gaming notebook Recommended

Filed under: Electronic,News,Notebook,laptop Review — admin @ 7:05 am

Compared to the low-cost competition, second-tier manufacturers, most of the top vendors in order to quality, performance, and after-sales service won the concerns of consumers. The product brand, quality, white-collar workers have higher requirements, such as gamers buy notebook, the most attention is the first-line vendor products.

Many pragmatic consumers found that buying a "real" money in this high-end gaming or even a good performance can buy two desktop computers. About to move office-based notebook computers gaming performance, users need not asking for too much, as long as you can you can run the game smoothly.

Review of Acer Aspire One

Filed under: Laptop Battery,laptop Review — admin @ 11:24 pm

The Aspire One is an 8.9" netbook laptop with an Intel Atom N270 CPU and GMA950 integrated graphics and 6cell acer laptop Battery just like every other netbook out there. With identical hardware, you would assume to get roughly the same performance out of it, Acer Travelmate 4502wlci Battery and you would assume correctly.

Features
There is still a measure of variation between different netbooks and brands, most notably the appearance, but quality aspects are naturally also important, as well as connectivity, hard drive,Laptop Batteries, RAM and Acer Aspire 5004wlmi Battery size.

Regarding the last item in the list, we managed to find the desirable and elusive model with the 6-cell battery, which offered 5 hours and 40 minutes of battery life with wireless on and backlight set to 75%. It wouldn’t be unreasonable to assume that the 3-cell, which is more common, would yield about half of that Acer Aspire 1411 Battery .

Big for a Netbook

Of course, getting the larger battery also means sacrificing some portability. The Aspire One is actually a bit large already (as far as netbooks go), and the 6-cell battery increases the weight to roughly 2.5 pounds. Another minor annoyance with the Acer is the relatively wide and thick bezel that makes it even slightly larger than some 10-inch laptops.

That annoyingly large LCD bezel is unluckily not the only letdown as far as the Acer Aspire 3610 Battery screen is concerned. Its viewing angles are also very poor – colors start shifting as soon as you’re not exactly in front of the screen.

Bottom Line

You also get varying amounts of RAM and hard drive (or SSD) space depending on which Acer Aspire 8920 Series Battery version you get. The Aspire One is available with both flash memory-based Solid State Drives in smaller sizes and regular notebook hard drives. Our review model had 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive – both quite generous for a netbook. In most aspects, you actually get a lot of "bang for the buck" with the Aspire One.

On the whole it’s a reasonably well-rounded netbook that – like most netbook models – Acer BT.00803.005 Battery offer few surprises. Regarding what you have to use it, it’s hard not to recommend this netbook in spite of a few flaws.

ASUS EeePc 1005HA laptop Review

Filed under: Laptop Battery,laptop Review — Tags: — admin @ 10:27 am

The ASUS Eee PC 1005HA is ASUS’ update to their best-selling Eee PC 1000HA, and continues the tradition of excellent netbooks. The 10.1″ unit weighs in at only 2.8lbs, and at its finest point is well under an inch thick. The keyboard was solid, the trackpad multitouch, Asus 70-n651b1010 Battery and the overall design glossy and stylish. Most important of all though, the battery life was impressive, even when compared against other netbooks. The internals are what you’d expect, with an Intel Atom N280 1.66GHz, 160GB HDD, and 1GB RAM. Are there enough features to justify picking it over netbooks with similar performance? Read on to find out.

Case Look and Feel

The 1005HA features ASUS’ “seashell” design, Asus A3E Battery includes a fairly sharp taper from the wider back of the netbook to the thinner front. The entire machine is covered front and back in a bright gloss, with only the matte keys of the keyboard spared the shiny expense. It does look nice, but is exceptionally prone to fingerprints. The lid is all black except for a silver “Eee” emblazoned in the center and towards the top. The front of the display features the glossy screen surrounded by a somewhat thick black frame, the top of which houses the integrated webcam. The display is secured to the rest of the unit with two thick hinges, which extend along with the display below the keyboard to save space.
The Asus a32-u5 Battery glossless keyboard begins about an inch in from the top edge, and sits flush with the sides of the case. The top of the touchpad is flush to the keyboard and the touchpad buttons are flush to the bottom of the case, a clear space saving gesture. The overall look Asus 70-n9x1b1000 Battery is very smooth and all the status lights are subtle. The feel is solid as a whole, although the back of the netbook is a little heavier as a result of the taper.

Size & Weight

The Eee PC 1005HA is not the smallest or thinnest netbook on the market, but fares well on both counts. The weight of 2.8lbs felt very light and easy to carry. I actually carried the 1005HA in its protective sleeve inside the power cord pocket (instead of the power cord) of my standard 15” laptop case earlier today, and barely noticed the difference, even from a strictly visual perspective. With dimensions of 10.3 x 7 x 1.4 inches, but measuring only .89” at its thinnest point, there is little bulkiness to worry about.

Keyboard and Touchpad

The Asus f2 Series Battery keyboard on the 1005HA is 92% of full sized, with a slightly “older fashioned” keyboard with keys spaced close together. Personally, while I like the way chiclets look and often how they type as well, I enjoyed the larger keys immensely while typing. I am always leery of a learning curve on some netbook keyboards (not to mention some full laptop keyboards), where the first few days are spent making numerous typos, but I was able to start typing normally on the 1005HA within the first day. ASUS Asus m9j Battery does a great job of keeping important keys such as shift, tab and backspace relatively close to full size. The up and down arrow keys are a little shrunken and house pg up/pg dn functions, but the left and right keys and home/end functions are generously sized, which made me happy since I use those keys quite frequently while typing. There is some flex in the keyboard, especially on the left side, and it’s a little noisy, but overall it is quite usable, and after typing this entire review on it I have no major complaints.
The touchpad Asus z99sc Battery is dimpled to differentiate it from the glossy wristrest. Use was comfortable, and there was no sticking feeling after extended use. There is a single button beneath it which pivots right or left, and the button was responsive and quiet.

Display Quality

The resolution of 1024×600 Asus A33-U5 Battery is standard for netbooks nowadays, but unimpressive, as many netbooks are starting to come with a higher 1366×768 resolution. That said, the LED backlit display was sufficiently bright and had good horizontal viewing angles, although the vertical angles were not as good. The glossy display works well indoors where the full brightness can almost completely mask the glare in a well lit room – outdoors, the task is much harder, so be prepared for reflections.

Connectivity

The connectivity options on the EeePC 1005HA are fairly standard for the category, with the brightest spots being a full sized VGA port (which some other EeePCs lack), and 802.11n WiFi/Bluetooth. There are 3 USB ports and a card reader, but nothing else of significant note like HDMI. Unsurprisingly, there is no optical drive either. Since the back of the keyboard is thicker but the rear of the base is blocked by the hinged display, most of the ports are crowded towards the back of the unit.
The left Asus S2691061 Battery side features an exhaust, followed by a single USB port, VGA, and the small power jack.

The right side features a card reader in the front (the only thing that will fit), audio in/out, 2 more USB ports and Ethernet.

The tapered front features no ports, although it is home to the stereo speakers and most of the status lights. The back , as mentioned above, is completely obstructed by the display, and there are no ports.

Upgrading

One nice thing that the 1005HA has is removable parts, which make basic upgrades a cinch. The battery is removable, enabling one to downgrade to a lighter batter or possibly upgrade to a higher powered 3rd party battery. There is also an easily removed panel for RAM upgrades if you want to surpass the standard 1GB. Aside from that, netbook hardware is pretty much netbook hardware.

Features

The Eee PC 1005HA Asus A8H Battery has a number of features that serve to make life a little easier for the user. Some of these are standard functions built into the keyboard, such as brightness up and down, volume up and down or mute, Wifi on/off and suspend. A more interesting feature built into the keyboard is ASUS’ “Super Hybrid Engine,” which allows one to quickly overclock/underclock the computer for the sake of battery life or performance. There is also a dedicated button for disabling the trackpad.
ASUS Asus EEE PC S101H Battery has also built some interesting software into the 1005HA. Most notable is the “Eee Docking software,” which is a somewhat customizable dock built into the top of the screen (though location is adjustable). It has 4 sections, the Eee Arena , Eee Sharing, Eee Xperience and Eee Tools. Each of these Asus G2 SERIES Battery has quick links to a number of applications, including Data sync for syncing with another computer, Eee Storage to access your free 10GB online storage, music/media applications, and parental controls. All these and a few other programs are easily accessible from the start menu as well.

Performance

If there is Asus 90-nfpcb2001 Battery one thing that netbook owners need to realize, it’s that they are not as powerful as fully fledged laptops, sporting low profile CPUs and integrated graphics. As such, we expected this netbook to stack up about as well as other netbooks, which is to say it would be competent at performing basic tasks, but wouldn’t impress us at all in any category except battery life. As you’ll see below Asus a3hf Battery , we weren’t surprised, except perhaps in that battery life impressed us even more than we thought it would. For a detailed explanation of our testing methods, see here: (http://www.laptoplogic.com/about/test/)

Windows Vista Experience Score

We were unable to test this score for obvious reasons – this computer runs Windows XP.

    Samsung R610 3152
    Dell Studio 1537 2845
    ASUS Eee PC 1005HA 1585

The ASUS Eee PC drags well behind the competition here – but it’s not really a fair fight, as the Asus a8jn Battery 1005HA is the only netbook in the bunch. In some ways, this score is almost impressive, considering some of those notebooks have more than twice the firepower the 1005HA does.
Battery Performance – General Use (min)

    ASUS Eee PC 1005HA 370
    Dell Studio 1537 357
    Sony VAIO FW270j 181
    Samsung R610 157
    HP Pavilion HDX16 156

Now the tables have turned, Asus f3sc Battery as the 1005HA, the only netbook in the bunch, far outpaces the competition. The only thing close is the Dell Studio 1537, which uses a 9-cell battery to achieve that score.

Battery Eater

The above test Asus v2j Battery was in the course of regular use, in which WiFi was on and the computer was in average use. Battery Eater is a program with 2 more standardized tests, a “classic” test which renders a 3D image continuously for the duration of battery life, and a “reader” test which does the same but only displaying text. These numbers can effectively be used to determine a “minimum” and “maximum” lifespan for a battery.
Classic Result: 415 minutes

Real-Life Usage

In use, the 1005HA ran relatively cool, though this was in large part the result of a none too quiet fan. Still, on the whole, the netbook was everything one could expect. Asus z91er Battery is small and light enough to bring anywhere, and boasts an exceptional battery life so that you can leave the power cord at home, especially given the removable battery (though it should be noted the power cord is pleasantly small, so Asus X51H Battery wouldn’t be too bad to take it if needed to). The design is sleek and the keyboard is very usable. It is a netbook, so high end performance tasks being out of the question was no surprise, and it ran day to day text editing and web browsing without problems. It’s important to note that I am a tab junkie, and even with (gulp) 13 tabs open in FireFox 3.5, including one playing music, there is little to no slowdown (though I don’t recommend leaving that many tabs open for long).

Conclusion

In a laptop, the hardware specs aren’t going to dazzle you,Asus Z94 Battery and the 1005HA’s Intel Atom N280 1.66GHz CPU, 1GB RAM and 160GB HDD are just about par for the course. What you want from a netbook is portability, and as far as size and weight the 2.8lb Eee PC 1005HA gives you that as well as most other netbooks do. As far as Asus l5500 Battery life, the 1005HA delivers an imposingly lifespan, lasting over 6 hours in active use. Thanks to the removable battery, purchasing a single extra battery can guarantee all day use to even the most deep power users. The keyboard and trackpad leave little to complain about, and a set of nice software features makes general use that much easier. As a netbook, Asus f5 Series Battery won’t do for real gamers or people who want to watch HD video, and anyone reading this who thinks it will be as good as a regular laptop computer at either of those tasks is in store for disappointment. But for anyone looking to do text editing and web browsing on a highly portable computer with excellent battery life, the 1005HA would be a great choice.Asus Eee Pc 1101ha-mu1x Battery And at the new $299 price point, you won’t find many Fujitsu FPCBP36 Batterycomputers offering higher value. If you’re in the market for a new netbook, we recommend the ASUS Eee PC 1005HA.

Notebook Battery daily maintenance FAQ

Filed under: News,Notebook — Tags: , — admin @ 11:18 am

Remark that these steps correspond with decision dell laptop battery points on the flowchart and are reached directly by clicking on the diamond symbols. The text below cannot be read sequentially.

Needs AC Adapter to boot? The first step in troubleshooting your Dell Xps m1210 Battery is determining whether it can hold plenty charge to boot the notebook. Will the laptop power up and run on the battery, or does the AC adapter which doubles as the laptop battery charger need to be plugged in? Modern notebooks usually have a whole array of status LEDs that will tell you if the laptop senses great power coming from the battery charger and if or not the dell 5081P battery is charging. Unluckily, there’s no general standard for these LEDs, their colors or their actions. Note also that we’re using the term "boot" rather loosely here. If the laptop powers up on battery, you can hear the fans and the drives, your troubleshooting problem lies elsewhere.

Life Of Battery Too Short? This is the main problem laptop owners complain about, and often for good cause. Older laptops applying Ni-Cad and early Ni-MH Dell Vostro 1220 Battery often ran for 2.5 to 3.5 hours when brand-new, but within a month or so, would barely keep the notebook powered up for an hour. Newer laptops using Ni-MH and Li-ION batteries are much better, often holding onto a three hour life through hundreds of charge and discharge cycles. The first line of defense against complaints about Dell Studio 1737 Series Battery life by the manufacturers is always, "Did you charge and operate the battery according to the manual?" Unfortunately, different laptop manufacturers seem to disagree over how to best treat batteries of the same technology, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the differences extend to different models from the same manufacturer.

If the laptop’s Dell Inspiron 710m Battery life has been slowly degrading over time, it’s probably operating more or less in accordance with plan, but if you find the operating life shortened by more than 15% or 20% within the first few months, there’s probably something wrong. Batteries of all technologies can be "trained" to perform poorly through non-ideal usage patterns, but the Li-ION Dell Latitude c600 Battery technology is pretty resistant, and as long as you run them all the way down once a month or so, you can probably prevent any serious charging memory issues.

Going green is all the dell laptop battery rage for a lot of reasons. Although much of this green talk is hype, a lot of it is the real deal. There are a number of things that you can do in your business to easily and cheaply jump on the green bandwagon and saving your organization a few dollars at the same time you help reduce your impact on the planet.

Green desktops. Most PC vendors today get an option for more efficient laptop battery power supplies in desktop PCs. These power supplies reduce heat waste in your computers and can help to lower your overall energy costs. For example, Dell’s Studio Hybrid consumes only 26W when idle and 44W at full load. In contrast a typical desktop computer can consume two, three and four times this amount. At the same time, make sure that power management is enabled on desktop PCs so that Dell Latitude d620 Battery power consumption is, for example, greatly reduced by turning off a monitor after 20 minutes of idling.

Go to the cloud for your desktop services. Does your small business have relatively simple needs limited to email, word processing, spreadsheets and Internet access? CherryPal offers a service that can reduce energy costs related to desktop computing by up to 98%! CherryPal’s unique PC consumes just 2W of power, although you will still have to power a monitor separately as you do for another other PC. CherryPal notebooks Dell Latitude Cpid Battery have very minimal software installed and rely on users making use of Internet resources, such as GoogleDocs, although an open source word processor is installed on the unit.

Virtualize. If you have any kind of significant server infrastructure in place in your organization and you haven’t virtualized everything humanly possible, do it today. Stop reading right here, go virtualize your servers and then come back and pick up where you left off. Seriously – it’s easy if you use a product like PlateSpin, which automatizes the process of converting physical machines to virtual servers. With the number of options out there for virtualizing hardware, there is no reason at all anymore to default to a physical server solution for anything, unless absolutely required Dell Inspiron 1521 Battery due to hardware compatibility issues or sheer processing needs. Virtualizing your server computer hardware to fewer boxes will save you money both in hardware and in energy savings.

Ditch your phone system. If you’re large enough to have your own phone system and it’s reaching the end of its useful life, look for a replacement that uses less energy. We recently replaced our outdated phone switch with a unit that uses half the Dell Latitude d520 Battery energy. Obviously, we didn’t replace the system just to save energy as the cost/benefit would have been way off, but it’s a nice benefit.

Force duplex printing. Do your printers have duplexing units that allow you to print on both sides of paper? If so, force the printers to print duplex by default.

Consider recycled toner cartridges. This one is tricky because using the wrong vendor can ruin your printer and void your warranty and there are a lot of scam artists out there. We’ve located a great recycled toner cartridge vendor local to Westminster College and we’ve had outstanding success… less toner Dell Latitude d820 Battery waste goes to the landfill and we’re saving a ton of money to boot. Do your research, get references and test!

Put your PCs on power strips. Even when they’re not on, desktop PCs consume a small amount of electricity. By putting your PCs on power strips and asking your employees to turn their computers off at night by flipping the switch on the power strip, you’ll eliminate this trickle of Dell Latitude Lst c400st Battery power. Be warned, however, that going down this road will also eliminate your ability to perform automatic nightly maintenance on desktop computers since they will be unable to receive any communication from the network.

Unplug the chargers. When your employees aren’t charging their cell phones and other devices, ask them to unplug their chargers. Even when not actively charging anything, chargers do consume power.

Consider work-from-home arrangements. Do your employees perform work that must be handled Dell Inspiron 4150 Battery from a main position or can they work from anyplace? If possible, consider allowing your employees to work from home and provide them with laptop computers. By doing this, you avoid having to have space for as many another people; this is blank space that you have to light and heat. Further, your employees themselves will have less of an environmental impact since they won’t be on the road as much.

What do you do in your own organization to reduce your Dell Precision Workstation m50 Battery impact on the environment?

Toshiba Portege R500 computer Review

Filed under: laptop Review — Tags: — admin @ 8:01 am

Overview

Ultra portables have graven a niche in the laptop worldly concern as the sexy and stylish of all laptops out in the market place. They’re small and lightweight, making them the fucking travel companion if you’re a power user who is constantly on-the-go. However, as a result of their compact form factor the ultra portable is sometimes limited in its performance and feature sets, making them a product geared more for the travelling businessman. These machines usually have slower performing processors, lack of any video graphics capabilities, and no optical drive built-in in an effort to save Toshiba pa3638u-1bap Battery battery power and space.

To make up for these shortcomings, manufacturers usually dress them up in a lightweight and thin casing, and market them as a higher luxury product that costs hundreds more than their bigger, higher performing stablemates. Each manufacturer in the ultra portable market tries to outdo one another by offering a model that is significantly thinner and lighter than the competition.

Well, Toshiba is out to set records best their competition by introducing the highly anticipated Portege R500. Dubbed as the world’s thinnest and lightest laptop, the R500 can claim a number of other accolades including the longest battery life of a 12′ widescreen laptop computer, the world’s first LED backlit transreflective indoor/outdoor display and other lofty claims. While this machine is inarguably the lightest machine with an integrated optical drive, it is not the first two-spindle ultra portable. The Sony TX series featured a lightweight ultra portable design and an integrated optical drive as well. Regardless, 2.4 lbs. is ridiculously light!

Design
The highlight of the R500 is of course its diminutive size – just look at it! At 0.77′ thin and under 2.5 lbs. (Toshiba claims 1.7 lbs. Toshiba pa3609u-1brs Battery with the optical drive removed and solid state disk option) It’s pretty impressive how they crammed so much into so little space. Oh it’s plenty portable alright, yet still practical enough for everyday use and comfort. Already, I have had people come up to me asking me if that really is a laptop I’m carrying and to see the look in amazement when I confirm. Yet, I still have a hard time convincing myself I’m holding the world’s thinnest and lightest laptop. You really have to hold it and see for yourself just what a marvelous piece of engineering Toshiba has produced.

Toshiba has designed a truly uncommon machine with the R500. It is the first ultra portable with a standard optical drive built-in into the unit and comes in at less than an inch thick. Fairly much all ultra portables on the market have optional external optical drives that require the need to plug in via USB and a separate power adapter. Keeping with the times, the Portege comes in a nice silver finish on the outside and a contrasting black finish on the inner bezel.

Design-wise, the R500 is stylish and sexy without being over-the-top. Everything is nicely laid out and it is clearly plain that Toshiba wasted no space in keeping things lean and tight. The unit is cleanly designed with a mix of rectangular lines and soft curves – Functional and comfortable.

The R500 is incredibly thin at just a hair over .75′ thick, and roughly 2.4 lbs. in weight. Toshiba goes on to state that the R500 can be ordered with a 64GB solid state disk drive in lieu of the standard mechanical SATA drive, bringing the weight down to an incredible 1.72 lbs! With soft round edges Toshiba pa3206 Battery and a sturdy feel, Toshiba has made something wonderful to hold and use.

Build quality is top notch with excellent fit and finish as typical Toshiba laptops usually go. The unit is mostly made of plastic and while sturdy, there is some noticeable flexing around the palm rest area, due to the fact that thinner materials were used in an effort to save weight. The top lid is made of aluminum and is cool to the touch. I don’t expect this machine to handle much abuse though so be careful.

Keyboard
For such a small laptop, Toshiba did an incredible job of cramming an 85-key keyboard into a limited area without changing much of the key layout. There also dedicated buttons to launch Toshiba Assist, an onscreen utility program that comes built into the OS. Most ultra portables use a similar keyboard design, although Lenovo’s ThinkPad X Series use a more ergonomic 7-row design that technically qualifies as full-size. Keep in mind those machines start in the upper-2lbs range and get heavier from there; everything is truly a trade-off.

My only gripe (and also welcome surprise) are the oddly placed Page Up and Page Down keys to the right of the right Shift key, which I have a tendency to hit on accident. Otherwise, typing felt really good and natural. Those familiar with Toshiba machines will note that the keyboard now features the Windows Start key in the industry-standard location; previously Toshiba placed this key in the upper-right corner. Thanks for fixing that Toshiba! Flexing is minimal and it’s also spill-proof. Overall, the R500 has a very solidly built and comfortable keyboard.

Design Continued
The design of the touchpad is aesthetically pleasing to the eye and works as well as it looks. Feedback is good if a bit spotty at times, but that may be due to the sensitivity settings in Vista. Otherwise, there’s plenty of real estate to move around Toshiba pa3284u-1bas Battery .

Below the track pad is the mouse buttons laid out in a nice metallic-mirror finish. It looks great but also at the same time, feels rather cheap. And unfortunately, it’s a magnet for fingerprints and smudges. LED status lights emit through the mirror-like coating when lit. Left and right-click buttons are where they should be, separated by a finger print scanner for secure locking of the R500. The buttons have good tactile feedback and are well made, but I find the buttons too small. On many occasions, I wasn’t registering the click and had to glance down away from the screen to see if my thumb is where it should be.

Connectivity Options
Most ultra-portables scrimp on the port options as a result of their limited space and added heft. The Toshiba R500 manages to include the ports needed to get you through the most demanding of today’s computer tasks. And yes, the built-in optical drive is an added bonus and a first in its class. Let’s take a look at what this full-featured notebook computer comes with:

    * 3 USB 2.0 ports
* 4-Pin FireWire (IEEE 1394) port
    * VGA-Out Monitor port
    * Headphone / line-out port
    * Mic-in port
    * PC Card slot
    * Ethernet port
    * SD media card reader

The ports – there they are! On the right side, you’ll find one USB 2.0 port and an Ethernet jack. A standard PC Card slot is located on the bottom. Unluckily, Toshiba didn’t make use of the new ExpressCard standard. Also of note is the WiFI on-off switch, SD media card reader, and the optical drive – at only 7mm thin!!

On the left side, you’ll find a VGA output port for connecting to an external monitor or projector, a 4-pin ‘mini-plug’ Firewire port, and 2 more USB ports. Volume control, audio in/out and power port are also located on this side.

Heat and Noise
The R500 is a relatively quiet machine. The Toshiba pa3465u-1brs Battery fan is audible but its whisper quiet in operation, even if it is constant blowing hot air out the left vents.

Speaking of hot, however, the R500 can run really hot. This is due to just how thin in nature the unit is and the light materials used. That means the palm rests and keyboard will get warm quick, and you’ll really feel it on the bottom left side where the RAM slot is located. I almost burned myself holding the laptop on the side near the vents. If you plan on using this machine on your lap, don’t type too long in this setting as you will find it uncomfortable after awhile. It’s best to place it on a desk for use.

Upgrading and Expansion
It is no surprise ultra-portables sacrifice expandability for size. That said, the R500 really only has 2 options for expansion: upgrade to a higher capacity battery and upgrading the RAM. For the RAM, there’s only one slot available to add more. That’s pretty much it.

Features
The Toshiba Portege R500 we received comes pretty much in one configuration. It features Intel’s dual-core processor, the Core 2 Duo U7600. The U7600 is an ultra low-voltage processor that is designed for maximum power savings and runs at a reasonable 1.20GHz and features 2MB of L2 cache. 1GB of dual-channel PC2-533 DDR2 SDRAM comes standard and is expandable to 2GB max. A 64MB Intel GMA950 graphics chip is included, but don’t expect it to power any games.

Our R500 came equipped with a standard 2.5′ 120GB 5400RPM SATA hard drive. Hard drive performance seemed to be good, and it operated with little to no noise. We are glad to see Toshiba utilize industry-standard 2.5′ hard drives, Toshiba pa2441urn Battery compared to the smaller, slower, and lower capacity 1.8′ drives that some companies use to save space and weight. Toshiba utilizes a shock absorbing design to reduce impact, as well as an accelerometer to detect sudden falls and help protect the hard drive. To really lighten the load, the R500 can be ordered with a solid state drive with a meager 64GB of space. SSD hard drives are still relatively expensive, but are lighter, consume less power, generate no noise, and can be faster than their mechanical counterparts. When the industry matures, we’ll see higher capacity SSD drives for less.

Rounding out the package, our review unit includes a fingerprint ID scanner, built-in microphone, and basic sound card. Pathetically, there’s only one speaker and with it, you won’t be hearing much with it. The LCD panel and chassis both have shock protection to protect from light drops, but don’t expect anything rugged with something so small.

Disappointingly, Toshiba decided not to include a built-in modem to cut costs and save space. If you’re traveling a lot and you’re staying at a place that offers only landlines, you’ll have to invest in an aftermarket USB modem, or pray there’s a wireless signal around.

Display
The 12.1′ WXGA widescreen display of the R500 is surprising to look at. It’s so incredibly thinhow Toshiba managed to cram a screen into such a thin lid enclosure is beyond imagination. Yet, the display is sturdy with minimal flex and rippling when pressure is applied. The screen can reach resolutions up to 1280 x 800.

The R500 utilized LED backlighting instead of traditional LCD display setup. An LED backlit display is able to produce a more even light across the whole screen so that colors and images are consistently bright. LED backlights can also be equal or brighter than traditional LCD displays, yet use much less energy which helps improve Toshiba pa3356u-1bas Battery life.

In real world tests, I found the widescreen display very crisp and vibrant. I didn’t notice any huge difference having a LED backlit setup, but the color brightness stayed even throughout the screen, provided you’re facing directly at the screen and not from an angle. Watching a video yielded no problems with no blurring evident. Text showed up fine and clearly legible.

Toshiba claims this is the world’s first 12.1′ indoor/outdoor transreflective LED backlit display. In outdoor situations, you can turn off the LED backlighting with the push of a button, and let the transreflective screen utilizes natural light to produce the image on screen. This feature not only saves battery power, but allows you to work outside in the sunlight if you find it convenient. It is however limited in range, as the sunlight must be pointed directly at the screen to produce an image and usually, the results give off a dimmed/tinted appearance. Nonetheless, this technology certainly makes things legible in outdoor situations. The question is whether you actually want to sit outside in the heat with your back facing the sun.

Optical Drive
The R500 comes with a standard built-in optical drive. This might not be a surprise to many, but this is big news in the ultra-portable market as it marks a first for a system of this class. The 8X single-layer DVD +/-R optical drive measures only a scant 7-mm in thickness making this the thinnest enclosure ever!

Even better is how remarkably silent the drive operates. Never more than a slight hum this drive gives off. The optical drive as its dubbed, supports 9 formats listed here:
Maximum speed and supported formats:

    * CD-ROM (24x)
    * CD-R (24x)
    * CD-RW (10x)
    * DVD-ROM (8x)
    * DVD-R (8x)
    * DVD (8x)
    * DVD+R (8x)
    * DVD+RW (4x)
    * DVD-RAM (3x)

Wi-Fi
The R500 uses Intel’s Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN, Toshiba pa3291u-1brs Battery supporting the industry standard 802.11a/b/g/n wireless signals. Wireless connectivity worked very well with no hiccups and connectivity was fast. A convenient on/off switch allows you to shut off the wireless signal when not in use, saving battery power.
Users expecting to utilize the Internet via landlines beware – Toshiba omitted the inclusion of a modem in an effort to save space. So unless you’re connected wireless while on the go, you’ll have to shell out some money on a portable USB unit.

Bluetooth
Bluetooth 2.0 is included in the laptop and also features EDR (Enhanced Data Rate) for support of stereo headphones and other devices.

Battery
The standard battery is 5800mAh (6-Cell) Lithium Ion battery and Toshiba claims it’s the world’s longest performing battery for a widescreen 12.1′ laptop. The battery is inserted into the rear. The design is free of any protruding edges and is flush with the rest of the rear surface. Performance wise, I managed a good 4 hours using the laptop for web browsing and other basic tasks. Overall, I would expect the R500 to have very good battery life. You can see our full benchmark results later in the review.

AC Adapter
The Toshiba R500 comes with a compact power brick that is no bigger than your average sized mobile phone. It’s rated at 15V x 3A.

Setup Method

The laptop was set to run at full performance by setting the power scheme set to ‘Balanced’ with the AC plugged in, meaning that the CPU will not underclock while running the tests. For the battery performance test, the power scheme was set to ‘Power Saver’. Each battery performance test was repeated 3 times to ensure accuracy. Before each test was run, the laptop was rebooted and its hard drive defragmented.

System Functioning Testing

PCMark 05 Advanced Build 1.2.0* is the latest update to Futuremark’s popular overall system benchmarking program. The 2005 version adds multithreading, DirectX 9, Windows Media Player 10, virus scanning, High Definition video playback (WMVHD), Toshiba pa3357u-3brl Battery and a vast number of other tests to its suite. Testing your computer’s CPU, RAM, hard drive and graphics card, PCMark05 drives your computer to the max to determine its strengths and weaknesses.

PC World WorldBench 6 is the sixth revision of PC World’s well regarded full-system benchmarking suite. Worldbench runs a slew of benchmarking tests designed to simulate many common programs used by today’s typical user. Programs benchmarked are Adobe Photoshop CS2, Autodesk 3ds max 8.0, Firefox 2, Microsoft Office 2003 SP1, Microsoft Windows Media Encoder 9.0, Nero 7 Ultra Edition, Roxio VideoWave Movie Creator 1.5, and WinZip 10.0.

WorldBench 6 scores are baselined against a test system consisting of a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, 2GB DDR2 RAM, nVIDIA GeForce 7900GS graphics card, and 2 x 320GB Western Digital hard drives in RAID-0, with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium installed as the OS. After each test has been run, the system clears temp files and reboots.

Battery( Toshiba pa3356u-2brs Battery ) Performance Testing

Laptop Logic has chosen to take a ‘real-world’ coming to battery testing, eschewing a more formal software-based benchmark. There are four components of Laptop Logic’s new battery performance testing: DVD playback, general use, and recharge time.

DVD Playback is just as the name suggests. A copy of Peter Jackson’s King Kong will be played on the system (in either Windows Media Player or PowerDVD or whatever DVD playback software ships with the laptop). The movie will be played on loop in case the laptop’s battery exceeds the film’s 187 minute (3 hours 7 minutes) runtime. At the beginning of the test, the editor will record the start time with a PC-based stop watch program and note when the test concludes.

General Use will simulate a normal user experience, with tasks similar to those commonly performed by an average person. General Use will have several different tasks running simultaneously. The system will stream ESPN Radio Primetime’s podcast ( http://espnradio.espn.go.com/espnradio/podcast/index ), display a live video feed from the Turtle Bay Resort in Hawaii ( http://www.turtlebayresort.com/About_Us/webcam.asp ), have the Laptop Logic forums open in the background, and perform random web browsing and text editing. At the beginning of the test, the editor will record the start time with a PC-based stop watch program and note when the test concludes.

DVD Drain

While we are still gathering test results for this new benchmark, our testing showed the R500 lasted a reasonable 3.5 hours (210 minutes). During our Standard usage test, it lasted 265 minutes. Recharging from 0-100% took 225 minutes.
